Indie music is defined as music in which is
produced independently by major commercial record labels or their subsidiaries,
do-it-yourself approach to recording and publishing. This allows the artist to
have full control over their music and the videos they make for it meaning that
a lot of artists are very alternative and show a different side to the music
industry. There are many conventions to indie music and the videos those
include a thing from the mise en scene, camera angles, sound and editing which
is used in the videos; throughout this blog post I will be discussing the
different conventions which are shown in three main indie music videos.
The first video which is found to demonstrate
indie music was kodaline one day this video shows very key conventions to the
genre indie. The main element of this music video is the performance this is a
very stereotypical to indie music videos almost all indie music videos include
a performance element this is so they can show case there performance skills
and to focus on what they love dong which is performing as it is normally about
the passion not the fame which the video may bring. One of the key feature
which shows the conventions is the mise en scene which is shown throughout this
first feature which subverts to the stereotypes is the costume that the band
are wearing very basic outfits which makes the band come across as not having
put much thought into the costume this could be to make the video seem more
realistic to the situation this is very common in indie music video as they
want their music videos to be realistic to the situation they are acting out;
another key feature of the mise en scene is the setting used in the video in
this video the setting is very plan and basic allowing the audience to focus on
the video and the performance which is being shown throughout the video. The camera angles used are very key to adding effective
to the video and helping make the performance element more exciting to watch
for the audience; the main shot I felt did this was the establishing shot at
the beginning of the video showing the room with feathers falling down from the ceiling this helps to set the scene and help to introduce the different members of the band this if effective to making the video seem more exciting and inviting. another camera angle which is very effective is the close up shot used right at the beginning of the performance this allows the audience to almost get to know the character and the editing used in this part is to slow down the speed in which he is walking this makes the first more intimate with the audience allowing them to feel engaged; this is very common in indie music because it allows the performance to be more interesting. The last key feature I felt was very effectively used was the editing the main piece of editing I felt was was effective in this music video was the slow motion used in the beginning establishing shot these allows the room to be fully viewed which helps to set the scene it also allows the mood to be set of the video this is the idea of heartbreak and upset; another editing feature which helps to reinforce this is the idea of slow crosscutting between shots this makes the video slower and have more of a calm feeling. one of the final editing used was in the final scene where the live performance happens this is where the audience becomes more interactive and are able to feel more part of the as they move from close to long sots of the crowd this shows both angle of what the audience what be seeing and the main singer is seeing.
